Effect of shading on some perennial herba ceous legumes used as cover crops. |

Among the factors that can damage the success in establishment and maintenance of permanent plant cover of the soil, the shading tolerance of perennial herbaceous legumes is one of lhe most important, so it is necessary to identify the promissing species. An experiment was perforrned at the experimental station of Embrapa Agrobiologia, in Seropédica county, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, aiming to study the behavior of the perennial herbaceous legumes Arachis pintoi. Macroptilul1l atropurpureltl1l and Pueraria phaseoloides, cultivated.under 25%, 50% and 750/c levels of shading, which were achieved using covers made of shade-netting. The results obtained to stems elongation, production of dry malter of stems, leaves and roots, and dry weight of nodules, showed a negative shade effect on A. pi11toi plant growth. P. phaseoloides showed partial tolerance to shade, showing effect only on elongation of stems and dry matter of nodules. M. atropurpureum showed adaptation to ligth restriction, showing no effects on the parameters studied.
